The Wake of Yer Man

‘The Wake of Yer Man’ is a collection of semi-autobiographical short stories set in 1990’s rural Ireland.

This short anthology features eleven stories, including the ‘The Wake of Yer Man’, which won the award for best short story in the Jersey Festival of Words.

Author Yvonne Heavey now lives in Jersey, Channel Islands, but her memories of a cherished childhood amid the boglands of County Westmeath never left her.

These stories feature the bookies of Mullingar, the kindly nuns of St Vincent de Paul’s and the exotic attractions of a day’s holiday spent in Bettystown, the Florida of Ireland’s east coast, among others.

Each tale returns the reader to a time and place where community and its characters (and dogs) were the lifeblood of existence, each one narrated through the eyes of a young girl.
